Freeman Wills Crofts
Born Dublin 1879, he spent his working life with the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway ending in 1929 as chief engineer. His first novel (The Cask, 1920) is an exemplar of precise and complex plotting - as complex as a railway timetable and sometimes to the detriment of character development.
